Station dogs grow up beneath cargo rails and beside loading ramps, where a loose parcel is an invitation and an unattended glove is clearly a rescue in progress. They learn the rhythm of working crews early: wait while the heavy things move, follow the familiar boots, and carry whatever somebody has managed to leave behind.

This one is small enough to vanish behind a pack and determined enough to drag a prize nearly its own size back into line. Praise is accepted with a wag, payment is accepted in scratches, and both are considered excellent reasons to inspect the same patch of ground again just in case something new has fallen there.

Station Cat

Station cats make homes in the warm gaps between ledgers, lamps and freight shelves. They know which workers share lunch, which doors close too quickly, and which tiny clink means something valuable has rolled under a bench. Nothing on the floor stays unnoticed for long.

This one accompanies a party with the solemn dignity of a supervisor conducting an inspection. A recovered bundle is deposited without fuss, followed by the sort of look that makes gratitude feel mandatory. When no work remains, the nearest open pack becomes a bed and all further inventory decisions require feline approval.

This shepherd was raised for distance, alert work and the complicated art of staying close without standing underfoot. Its light leather is cut around the shoulders and chest so a full stride remains easy, with just enough protection for brush, broken stone and the occasional enthusiastic dive beneath abandoned furniture.

Dropped supplies receive immediate attention. The dog circles once, checks the party, and returns with the prize wearing the unmistakable expression of someone who has solved a crisis nobody else had noticed. It takes its duties seriously, but not so seriously that a fluttering ribbon cannot interrupt them for one hopeful pounce.

The spotted cat's fitted leathers leave the spine, shoulders and long ringed tail free for careful climbing and sudden turns. It moves through camp with the confidence of an animal that has already mapped every crate, ledge and lap, including several the party has not discovered yet.

Loot collection is performed with elegant efficiency right up until a strap end wiggles or dust catches the light. Then efficiency waits. The cat eventually returns with the missing parcel, sits beside it, and purrs as though the delay were an intentional lesson in patience rather than a brief and extremely important hunt for nothing at all.
