A practical guide to bows, arrows, draw weight, range practice, weather, gravity, safe hunting, and the materials used by archers across the eight known expeditions.
A bow stores the work of the archer's body and releases it through the arrow.
The weapon can be light in the hand while demanding great effort at full draw. It can send several arrows in the time a crossbow is spanned once, but each shot asks the archer to draw, hold, aim, and release again.
Choose a bow that fits the body using it. Draw length matters as much as strength. A powerful bow drawn poorly wastes force, strains joints, and teaches bad movement.
The working parts
The curved limbs store energy. The grip keeps the bow aligned. The string transfers the limbs' return into the arrow. Reinforced tips hold the string at each end. Some bows use one material throughout. Others combine woods, horn, sinew, cable, resin, metal, glass, or grown components selected to bend together.
Every added material creates another place that must survive damp, heat, cold, pressure change, age, and rough travel.
Inspect the limbs before stringing. Look for cracks, twists, lifted layers, soft spots, damaged tips, and changes in the curve. Check the string for broken fibers, uneven wear, chemical damage, and moisture. A string that appears sound at rest may separate under full draw.
Never release a bow without an arrow or another safe load. The force meant for the arrow returns through the limbs and can damage the weapon or the archer holding it.
Draw weight and draw length
Draw weight is the force required to bring the string to the intended position. More weight can produce a harder shot when the bow, arrow, and archer are suited to it. More weight also slows tired hands and makes poor form worse.
An archer should be able to draw smoothly without lifting the shoulders, twisting the spine, or pointing the bow somewhere unsafe. If the last part of the draw becomes a contest against the weapon, choose a lighter bow and train.
The bow must also match reach. A short draw wastes a longer bow's working curve. An excessive draw may damage the limbs or place the string against the arm, feathers, clothing, or equipment. Different bodies need different grips, string positions, and protective gear. Copying another archer's measurement is not fitting the weapon.
Arrows
An arrow is a complete projectile, not a point attached to any straight stick.
The shaft must be straight, sound, and matched to the bow. A shaft too flexible bends wildly during release. One too stiff may leave poorly and strike away from the aim. The point, shaft, fletching, and nock must align.
Broad hunting heads cut deeply but can catch on equipment and damage a quiver. Narrow points travel cleanly and concentrate force. Blunt heads serve practice and some small-game work. Specialized heads should be covered until use.
Check recovered arrows before returning them to the quiver. Roll shafts when a flat surface is available. Flex them cautiously while listening for cracks. Inspect the nock and the area behind the point. An arrow weakened by one impact may break beside the archer's hand during the next release.
A quiver protects arrows and keeps them reachable. It should not rattle, shed points, or place sharp heads where a fall drives them into the wearer. Rainhide, dustveil, arkcloth, basalt-fiber, inkcedar, ribbonfold, star-map, and wetroute cases solve different local problems. None excuses wet arrows from being dried.
The shot
Set the feet before raising the bow. Place the arrow correctly on the string and rest. Keep fingers, clothing, hair, feathers, jewelry, straps, and loose equipment clear of the string's path.
Draw with the back and shoulders working together. Reach the same position each time. Aim while the sight picture remains steady. Release without tearing the hand away. Keep the bow directed at the target until the arrow has left.
Fast shooting is repeated sound shooting. It is not hurried failure.
Practice from the positions the journey will require: standing on uneven earth, kneeling behind cover, turning from a path, firing beneath branches, and moving only after the arrow is safely away. Never practice a difficult position without a clear range behind the target.
Weather, air, and gravity
Arrows travel through the world around them. Wind moves them. Rain adds drag and weight. Heat and damp change strings, glues, shafts, and limbs. Thin air preserves speed differently from dense air. Gravity changes how quickly an arrow falls without removing the force needed to start it.
Test the bow after arriving somewhere new.
Glassmoon's low gravity does not make every shot easy. Its maintained habitats have walls, pressure systems, fragile gardens, and long sightlines whose distance can be misjudged. Deepforge's gravity makes repeated drawing and holding more tiring. The Sable Writ Isles punish high arrows with changing wind. The Mirror Belt changes light and glare even when the air remains still.
Shoot several marked arrows into a safe backstop before trusting an old range estimate.
Hunting
Identify the animal and what lies beyond it. Do not shoot at sound, brush movement, a reflected shape, or the part of a body you cannot identify.
Use a bow and head capable of reaching the necessary depth. Wait for a clear angle. A poor shot turns a hunt into a long pursuit of an injured animal and may draw larger predators to the trail.
Know which animals may be hunted, which are breeding, which defend young, and which carry local poison, disease, or dangerous resonant effects. A dead creature can remain hazardous.
Recover what can be used. Meat, hide, sinew, horn, bone, feathers, glands, and other materials spoil or become unsafe at different rates. The shot is only the beginning of the work.

Use a bow when repeated ranged attacks, quiet operation, and direct control over every draw suit the work. Carry sound arrows. Protect the string. Learn the air of the place you enter.
The arrow leaves quickly. Judgment must happen before it does.
