A defense manual explaining armor, resistance, vulnerability, wards, barriers, and why a material or creature protected against one kind of harm may be exposed to another.
Resistance means that a target receives less harm from a particular source. Vulnerability means that the same source finds an easier path through the target's body, equipment, or defenses.
Neither word describes courage, health, or general toughness. A creature can be difficult to cut and easy to burn. Another can live inside a furnace and die quickly to cold. The correct question is never only, "Is it strong?" The correct question is, "Strong against what?"
Armor and physical force
Armor protects mainly against physical harm. It spreads impact, catches an edge, slows a point, and places durable material between force and flesh.
More armor does not make a body untouchable. A heavy blow can pass force through a plate without cutting it. Gaps must remain for movement, vision, breathing, and joint action. Repeated strikes deform material and loosen fastenings.
Armor can be pierced, reduced, or partly ignored by attacks designed to defeat it. A fighter should know not only what the armor was built to stop, but how it fails.
Physical armor is not the same as resistance to fire, cold, lightning, poison, light, or dark. A thick metal plate may stop a blade while conducting current or holding heat against the wearer.
Resistance to the six other forms
Fire, cold, lightning, poison, light, and dark are commonly answered by matching resistances. A resistance may come from anatomy, clothing, treated material, insulation, medicine, a harmonic ward, equipment, or several smaller protections working together.
The protection is specific. Fire resistance does not automatically reduce cold. Poison resistance does not stop a spear. A dark ward does not make its wearer harder to see and does not protect against every attack made in darkness.
Resistance reduces the harm that reaches the target. It does not erase the attack's other consequences. A fire-resistant traveler may still stand inside a burning building. A lightning-resistant mechanic may survive a current that destroys the machine supporting the floor.
How vulnerabilities form
A vulnerability is a condition that makes a matching form of harm more effective. It may be natural, built into equipment, caused by the surroundings, or created during the fight.
Dry fibers catch fire. Waterlogged clothing draws heat from the body. Exposed metal carries lightning. Open filters admit poison. A polished surface may redirect light away from one angle and concentrate it at another. Cracked insulation may turn a protective suit into a trap.
Anatomy matters as much as material. A creature with thick plates may resist cuts while the joints between them remain exposed. A body adapted to deep cold may fail quickly under heat. An automaton may ignore a poison meant for flesh but be damaged by a corrosive compound that ordinary lungs could tolerate briefly.
These are examples, not universal rules. Test the actual target. Similar appearance does not guarantee similar protection.
Temporary weakness
Resistance can change during combat.
A fractured ward, damaged shell, contaminated seal, exhausted organ, or hostile Alteration working may lower a defense that was reliable moments earlier. Elemental Fracture is designed for this purpose. It weakens resistance to fire, cold, lightning, poison, light, and dark for a limited time.
It does not reduce physical armor. A party that fractures an enemy's elemental defenses must follow with the forms of harm that were actually exposed.
Some weapons and techniques pierce part of a matching resistance. Piercing is not the same as removing the defense for everyone. It allows that attack to pass more of the protection. A true reduction changes how later attacks are received while the effect remains.
A target can be driven below ordinary protection and into vulnerability. When that happens, the matching harm grows more effective instead of merely returning to its usual strength.
Wards, barriers, guards, and avoidance
Not every defense is resistance.
A barrier places a limited layer in front of the body and receives damage until it breaks or expires. It may absorb several forms of harm without granting lasting resistance to any of them.
A ward may provide resistance, create a barrier, change an attack's path, or perform some combination of these. Ask what a ward does. The word alone is not a complete description.
A guard or block meets an attack with a shield, weapon, stance, or reinforced surface. Armor protects when physical force reaches worn protection. Avoidance keeps the attack from connecting cleanly at all.
These defenses can support one another, but they are not interchangeable. A person who dodges does not need the armor for that missed strike. A barrier that breaks may leave the resistance beneath it unchanged. Strong resistance does not help against a physical blow if the body has no physical protection.
Materials and environment
Equipment must be judged as a whole.
Insulation may resist cold and interrupt electrical paths while trapping dangerous heat. Sealed clothing may keep poison out while limiting air and cooling. Wet fabric may resist a brief spark or flame under one condition and worsen cold or electrical danger under another. Reflective layers may reduce light from one direction while announcing the wearer's position from another.
The environment changes the answer. Water, dust, pressure, vacuum, cramped metal rooms, open ground, living roots, and active machinery all create new paths for harm. Protection tested in a dry workshop may behave differently in rain or aboard a damaged vessel.
Inspect equipment after the fight. Resistance supplied by a cracked plate, emptied filter, spent coating, or broken ward may be gone even when the item still looks wearable.
Finding the useful defense
Observe the first exchange. If a weapon produces little effect, change the form of harm instead of repeating the same failure. If an enemy suddenly begins taking more damage after a ward breaks or a fracture lands, use the opening before it closes.
Share what you learn. The attacker choosing a current, the defender changing gear, and the healer preparing for the next injury need the same information.
Different cultures explain resistance through medicine, material craft, harmonic theory, inherited adaptation, or religious practice. They do not need one explanation to agree that a certain protection works. Measure the result, respect the knowledge that produced it, and prepare for the form of harm that remains.
