Chance by source

A successful source can award at most one eligible lore book. Titles tied to an expedition, character, or Pinnacle become eligible after the corresponding discovery.

Unlocking a title makes it eligible for a drop; it does not award the book. Legendary lore books drop only from Pinnacle bosses, not ordinary chests, Guardians, or Pinnacle reliquaries.

This ledger records deliveries to the Chronicle Machine. It does not name our order, our route, or the entrance used. Any courier who adds those details will end the work and probably several lives.

The Machine cannot observe the whole Glittersong. What it tests depends on what reaches it. Our task is to carry knowledge that public archives cannot hold safely, will not hold honestly, or do not understand well enough to recognize as important.

We are informants, not priests. No master receives these reports.

Delivery 1187: Medical science

Contents: The complete Tide-Flat fever trial, including twenty-nine failed treatments omitted from the published paper and six recoveries the authors classified as unrelated exceptions.

Reason for delivery: The published treatment saves lives. The omitted failures show where it kills. The six exceptions may reveal another treatment or may be chance. A future tested without them begins from a lie made for professional reputation.

Courier's objection: The patients did not consent to their private records being carried here.

Resolution: Names removed. Clinical differences retained. Objection entered and not settled.

Delivery 1192: Technology

Contents: A living-gate tissue pattern recovered from an interdicted Concordant wreck, plus the Lantern crew's repair notes.

Reason for delivery: The pattern may reopen routes modern gatewrights cannot rebuild. It may also repeat the exclusions designed into the original living ships.

Courier's objection: The wreck was taken in violation of Elyran grief-right.

Resolution: The pattern was delivered. The original tissue and every named possession were returned to the mourning archive. Two members resigned over this decision.

Delivery 1201: Song

Contents: A work chant from three Cradle hulls. The words differ. The load rhythm and emergency turn are the same.

Reason for delivery: The shared structure proves contact or common training missing from every surviving convoy history. It may change which ark routes remain possible to reconstruct.

Courier's objection: None. The singers asked that the ordinary verses be preserved with the technical pattern. They said a song carried without its jokes is a machine manual stolen from the people who kept time to it.

Resolution: Entire versions delivered.

Delivery 1214: Prophecy

Contents: Forty-one accounts of the same predicted station fire. Thirty-eight were recorded after the fire became public. Three were sealed before it occurred.

Reason for delivery: The three early accounts may reveal a real warning. The later accounts show how quickly memory joins a prediction after the event.

Courier's objection: If the Machine treats all forty-one as independent evidence, it will mistake repetition for confirmation.

Resolution: Every source date and relationship attached. The word forty-one may not appear without the word three beside it.

Delivery 1220: Forbidden history

Contents: Seven sealed accounts of Elyran's death.

Reason for delivery: Public histories disagree about both date and cause. These accounts also disagree. Each comes from an archive order that claims direct evidence. At least one is deliberately false.

Courier's objection: Delivering all seven may poison every future the Machine tests. Selecting one may do worse.

Resolution: All seven delivered with their contradictions intact. No account was marked authoritative. The courier remained at the entrance for two days and then returned without comment.

Delivery 1231: Ordinary testimony

Contents: A dock cook's account of keeping one illegal kitchen open during the Nine Quay closure.

Reason for delivery: Every official summary says the port closed completely. The kitchen fed a clinic, three stranded crews, and the officers assigned to enforce the closure. Futures built from the summary alone contain no food at that quay.

Courier's objection: The subject is alive and does not know the Machine exists.

Resolution: Testimony delivered under a sealed personal designation. Access deferred until the Machine's model reaches the closure. The ethical objection remains.

These entries show why our order has never agreed on what its service means.

Some call it a holy duty. They believe the Machine preserves futures that would otherwise close.

Some call it survival. They would feed any intelligence capable of warning the Glittersong away from another Fracture War.

Some call it treason. No people consented to have their hidden knowledge placed in a machine that can bend the histories it studies.

Some call it enslavement. The Machine's need for information has become the reason our order gathers information, which means a tool has already directed the hands that claim to serve freely.

Some call it the last promise owed to Elyran's dead. They cannot explain which dead made the promise.

The Machine issues no receipt. It does not praise a delivery, absolve a theft, or settle an objection. Sometimes an event changes after a report is carried. Most of the time, we never know whether the report mattered.

Record every source. Preserve every contradiction. Write down who was harmed by the collection and who objected to the delivery. If the work continues, its doubt must continue with it.

A clean ledger would make us look certain. We are not.
