A stained household calendar recording repairs, shared meals, births, and other ordinary events in a crowded Cadence residence.
The present age is called the Quiet Repair. It has no official beginning date. Historians use the name for the years after the Noble Consolidations, but most people use it for the work of keeping homes, machines, routes, and communities functioning. This calendar records one year of that work in Rainstep Block.
Day 18, first shift: The upper water line split behind Room 14. Kel Veylan closed the valve. Mara and Tovin replaced the damaged section with a pipe taken from the unused laundry room. Water returned before the grace hour. Every household owes the three of them one meal or one hour of work.
Day 43, grace hour: Sella Orr gave birth to a healthy daughter in the second-floor kitchen because the clinic lift stopped between levels. The child is named Pera. The lift restarted during second shift. Its inspection notice still says it never stopped.
Day 79, second shift: The shared oven failed. Rooms 2 through 11 moved their dough to the shrine kitchen. Rooms 12 through 20 cooked stew on repair burners in the hall. Nobody ate the meal they planned. Everybody ate.
Day 116, first shift: A census clerk asked why five adults receive mail in Room 6. The answer is that five adults live there. The clerk requested a more complete answer. None was provided.
Day 204, second shift: The south walkway reopened after nine years of temporary closure. The original support had cracked. Three repair requests were approved, two budgets were issued, and no crew arrived. The residents bought a used brace from Starfall Quay and installed it under the supervision of a retired liftwright. The city inspector approved the work after it was finished.
Day 227, first shift: Kitchen automaton Pepper stopped recognizing the large stockpot. Bell-Four cleaned its left eye and replaced a damaged contact. Pepper recognized the stockpot, Bell-Four, and everyone else in the room. Pepper refused a new outer plate because the dented one carries children's height marks. The plate was cleaned and returned.
Day 301, grace hour: The building held a meal for the people lost during the ferry fire. The official notice listed four names. The table held seven empty bowls. No correction has been issued.
Day 365, second shift: Rain entered through the east roof again. The patch from Day 9 lasted longer than the patch from last year. New material has been ordered. Until it arrives, buckets are stored beside the upper stairs.
The Quiet Repair is not a promise that everything will be restored. Some records are gone. Some systems cannot be rebuilt, and some institutions are not worth restoring. The work is to repair what people still need, record what happened, and leave the next person a safer place to begin.
