Bruce Hayden explains how one genuine weapons crate acquired four valid warrants, why none of them cancelled the others, and which questions kept the argument from becoming a shooting.
The crate was genuine. I am beginning there because everyone else began with the labels, and the labels were not.
One cliff court issued a freight warrant allowing the crate to travel from its port to the purchaser's oath house. A second court issued a claim warrant recognizing a contractor who said the purchaser owed him enough money to cover the crate. The port court then issued a seizure warrant after somebody reported the shipping label as false. The fourth warrant ordered my arrest for carrying restricted weapons through an island whose road I had not used.
All four carried real seals. This did not make them compatible. It also did not make any one of them disappear.
People arriving from places with one court often expect two contradictory warrants to cancel each other. In the Sable Writ Isles, they usually create work. Each court may recognize a different contract, border, route, deadline, or definition of the same cargo. A warrant remains dangerous until the correct authority suspends, satisfies, replaces, or rejects it.
Read the named subject first. A warrant against a carrier is not automatically a warrant against the cargo. A claim against the cargo is not automatically permission to arrest its owner. A right to inspect is not a right to seize. Officials may act as though these distinctions are inconvenient. They remain distinctions.
Read the jurisdiction next. Identify the court that issued the instrument, the land or water where it applies, and the court expected to enforce it. An island may honor a neighbor's seal without accepting the neighbor's interpretation. Storms complicate this further because a diverted ship may enter a jurisdiction it never planned to visit.
Then read the dates. Check the issue time, service time, deadline, and any condition that causes the warrant to expire. Do not assume an Expiration Bell will settle the matter for you. Some bells follow calendars their courts no longer use, and they are very persistent about announcing the result.
Finally, inspect the seal, binding cord, copied entries, and corrections. A forged warrant can still get a person arrested before anybody proves it false. A genuine warrant can be altered after sealing. A perfect document may apply to a different Bruce Hayden. I have looked for one and would still like to meet him.
In this case, the weapons remained sealed while the courts argued. The purchaser proved the contractor's claimed debt had already been paid. The port fined me for the false label, which was fair. The island named in the arrest warrant admitted that I had not crossed its road, which took longer than it should have. The freight warrant was reissued after inspection, and the crate reached the oath house.
None of this establishes that every weapons shipment deserves to arrive. I refuse buyers when I believe the person holding the weapon is the greater danger. Bounty houses dislike that practice because it places my judgment between their money and their merchandise. They are welcome to dislike it.
Keep copies of every instrument. Keep the crate closed until the argument is about paper instead of guns. Know which court you are standing in. Most importantly, do not mistake four warrants for one problem. They are four problems sharing a crate.
