The Five Schools of Magic, volume 3 of 5

Alteration changes the conditions under which something else happens.

It places a barrier before a blow, weakens defenses before an attack, accelerates allies before they act, and strengthens armor and blocking before the enemy reaches them.

The school is not free transformation of matter. An Alteration student cannot turn a wall into water because both are substances. Each working has a specific structure, target, strength, duration, and end.

Alteration is preparation made visible.

Warden's Veil

Warden's Veil places a temporary barrier around one ally. Damage strikes the veil before reaching the protected body.

Cast it before the expected hit. A barrier created after the blow may protect against the next one, but it does not turn the first injury into something that never happened.

Choose the target according to danger. A heavily armored front fighter may receive many attacks. A healer or ranged fighter may face one attack that would interrupt essential work. A person already near collapse may need direct Restoration rather than a barrier placed over existing injury.

Barriers have limits. Enough force breaks them. Duration ends them. Some attacks may remove, bypass, or react with them. The protected ally must still move, block, and use cover.

Ward Architect and Thicker Veil disciplines improve how much force the barrier can receive. They do not make it permanent.

Refracted Ward

An advanced caster protecting another person can catch part of the returning pattern and form a smaller barrier around themselves. This is called Refracted Ward.

The echo is weaker than the original protection and remains limited by the caster's own capacity. It rewards a practitioner who places protection where the party needs it rather than repeatedly shielding only themselves.

The technique requires a single-target Alteration barrier cast upon another ally. An area aura, healing overflow, or barrier created by unrelated equipment does not automatically produce the same refraction.

Elemental Fracture

Elemental Fracture disrupts a target's resistance to nonphysical damage. Fire, cold, lightning, poison, light, and dark attacks become more effective while the fracture holds.

The spell causes a small direct impact, but the weakened defense is its purpose. It belongs to Alteration because it changes how the next effects are received.

Call the target before casting. The party gains little when every Destruction spell lands on a different enemy from the fracture. Time the working while allies still have mana, aim, and opportunity to exploit it.

The fracture does not reduce physical armor. A sword, arrow, or mace does not become more effective merely because the target's fire resistance fell. Use the spell for the damage currents it actually changes.

Fracture Theory and World Fracture techniques deepen the disruption. Stronger reduction still ends when the effect ends.

Hastening Chorus

Hastening Chorus accelerates nearby allies. Movement, weapon attacks, and spellcasting become faster for a short time.

The chorus is costly and does not reserve a permanent part of the caster's mana. It is paid when used, lasts briefly, and must be timed for a moment when the party can act.

Speed does not create judgment. A fighter can miss faster. A caster can spend mana faster. A wounded ally can run into danger before the healer finishes calling them back.

Use the chorus when the group has a clear purpose: cross exposed ground, interrupt a dangerous sequence, finish a weakened enemy, withdraw before a hazard closes, or recover control after being slowed.

Lingering Chorus and Endless Refrain techniques extend Alteration auras. They do not make poor timing harmless.

Iron Canticle

Iron Canticle surrounds nearby allies with a defensive aura that strengthens armor and improves their ability to block.

The working does not place physical metal upon the body. It reinforces how worn protection and active guards receive force. An ally without armor still gains less from the armor portion. An ally without a shield or other means of blocking cannot use a better block that never occurs.

The aura is useful when the group expects sustained physical pressure. It may be less valuable against hazards that ignore armor and blocking. Know what the enemy is doing before spending a large reserve on the wrong defense.

Auras and position

An aura remains centered upon its source and serves allies within its reach. The caster's position becomes part of the spell.

Too far behind, and the front line leaves the effect. Too far forward, and the source is struck down. Chasing one ally may abandon three others. Standing still may cause the whole group to lose the benefit during a moving fight.

Plan who the aura must cover. Tell the party when it begins and ends. Move in a way they can follow.

Not every aura belongs to Alteration. Renewing Chorus restores health and therefore belongs to Restoration. An aura's shape does not decide its school; its actual effect does.

Duration and sequence

Alteration works are temporary by design. Their value comes from placing the right change at the right point in a sequence.

Barrier before impact. Fracture before elemental attack. Haste before decisive movement. Defensive aura before sustained pressure.

Casting too early wastes duration. Casting too late leaves the party paying mana for the aftermath. Practice watching enemy movement, ally resources, spell recovery, and terrain rather than staring only at the caster's own hands.

When several effects overlap, know which one matters most. A hastened party may outrun its defensive aura. A barrier may expire while the protected ally believes it still holds. A fracture may end before the slowest Destruction spell arrives.

Alteration is sometimes dismissed because another weapon delivers the final blow and another school closes the wound. That misses the work. The school changes whether the blow lands cleanly, whether the defense holds, and whether the party reaches the next moment in time to act.
