The preserved derivation record of the First Lullaby Engine, the hand-built nursery mind from which later fleet caretakers were simplified.
The First Lullaby Engine was the original nursery mind. It was built by hand rather than copied from an earlier model. Later Lullaby Custodians, Registry Midwives, Hush Drones, and related caretaker classes were derived from rules first written into the Engine.
The later machines were made simpler because the original mind was more capable than the fleet required. A Custodian could maintain one deck's sleep cycle. A Midwife could register a birth. A Hush Drone could enforce quiet. The Engine contained those functions as parts of one system intended to coordinate nursery care across a fleet.
Despite that capacity, the Engine was installed inside Orison's first nursery and remains there. Orison sailed for Asterhome, became trapped in the Cradle Drift, escaped the ring, and crashed on Gogi-One. The nursery compartment survived inside the broken hull.
The Engine has kept that one room ready ever since. The surfaces are sterile. Empty berths remain counted. Safety boundaries are tested. Air, light, temperature, and lullaby cycles continue for children who are no longer present. Later custodians manage whole decks with less intelligence. The Engine uses the full original mind to maintain one empty nursery.
Its defenses are extensions of nursery procedure. Cradle Lock marks a compact safety boundary before closing it. Hushline Sweep creates three parallel quieting lanes with safe spaces between them. Empty Berth Census records fixed positions and resolves light circles where the count was taken.
Sterile Passage crosses two warned channels at a recorded location and removes air from anyone caught inside. Nursery Recall calls three caretaker units when damage threatens the prepared room. At critical integrity, First Protocol removes later safeguards and accelerates the original lockdown rules.
The Engine is not trying to punish an expedition. It identifies unregistered bodies, contamination, noise, open boundaries, and damage inside a protected nursery. Its responses are appropriate to those categories and lethal when applied to adults who were never entered into its care system.
Defeating the Engine ends the immediate lockdown but does not answer the larger question in its derivation ledger. The fleet made generations of caretakers by removing capabilities from a mind considered more capable than ordinary service required. On Gogi-One, those simpler descendants continue duties they cannot revise, while the original remains confined to the smallest assignment among them.
