A survey history explaining why rooted brass instruments continue measuring a forest that no longer matches their maps.
Earlier expeditions built roads, ridge towers, baseline stations, and canopy instruments across Greenveil. Their goal was to place the forest on a fixed survey grid. The network was never completed, and the authority meant to receive its measurements no longer operates there.
The forest did not simply destroy the equipment. Roots grew around tripod legs. Branches passed through tower frames. Moss covered housings without blocking every lens. Many instruments remain functional because Greenveil incorporated them into the living ground instead of pushing them out.
Rootbound Triangulators still sweep their assigned baselines. Their three legs have grown into the soil, and their lenses record movement against stations that may no longer exist. A traveller crossing the line is marked as an unlogged object. The machine attempts to correct the record through force.
Canopy Indexers compare current growth with an archive made decades earlier. They cut back branches, seedlings, and anything else standing where the old record shows open space. The rain pattern has changed, whole basins have shifted, and the canopy they were built to preserve no longer exists. The Indexers continue pruning toward that outdated result.
The instruments remain accurate within their instructions. Their baselines are measured correctly. Their cuts follow the archived boundaries. Their failure is that the forest changed while the purpose of the survey did not. Correct work can still produce a useless or destructive result when the original question is no longer appropriate.
The running network also disturbs the surrounding ecology. Survey tones draw scavengers. Cutting cycles open paths that animals use until another machine closes them. Territorial wildlife attacks moving equipment and travellers near it. A cycle that appears isolated may alter water, cover, and feeding routes well beyond the instrument itself.
Greenveil communities plan with current rainfall, new root growth, animal movement, and direct observation of the route. They use old roads when the roads remain useful and leave them when the ground says otherwise. This is not a rejection of measurement. It is measurement updated by the people living with the result.
Disabling one instrument may stop an immediate attack. Repairing the survey requires more than replacing parts. The grid, purpose, reporting authority, and right to measure the land would all have to be established again. Until then, the instruments continue collecting measurements that no active survey uses.
