A sealed study of the Unwritten Bell, formed from names removed before they could be recorded, rung, or buried.
Every dead person brought into Glassmoon's memorial system was meant to have a name entered, verified, sealed, and rung. Some names were removed before that process was complete. Houses removed inconvenient heirs. Clerks changed records under pressure. Debts were settled by denying that a person belonged to the family or estate at all.
Those people received no completed memorial. Their names were not rung and their records were not buried with the dead. The omissions accumulated beneath the memorial districts until an intelligence formed around the place they should have occupied. Wardens call it the Unwritten Bell.
The Unwritten Bell is not the silent seventh bell. The seventh is a physical bell protected by the Seventh Bell Warden. The Unwritten Bell is a separate presence beneath the Reach. It formed from missing entries rather than bronze, rope, and a prohibition nobody can explain.
It is not a mourner seeking comfort, and it does not act as vengeance for one known person. It has no complete names or histories from which to build either purpose. It forces itself into the count through pressure, position, and repeated attempts to mark anyone who enters its chamber.
Unsounded Toll releases a wide pressure field after a long warning. Vacant Entry records fixed positions and closes memorial seals around those places. Moving away works because the Bell marks the recorded location rather than following the person.
Struck from Record crosses two warned pressure lines at one recorded point while leaving the diagonal approaches open. Witnessless Procession sends six memorial lanes outward with clear gaps between them. As the encounter continues, the interval between warnings shortens. Near defeat, the Bell rings more quickly without calling other guardians.
These actions repeat the failures that formed it. A position is recorded without a person. A seal closes around an empty entry. A procession occurs without witnesses. The Bell produces procedure without the names that would give the procedure meaning.
Defeating the Unwritten Bell stops its immediate attempt to force new people into that pattern. It does not restore the removed names. That work requires surviving records, family testimony, corrected genealogies, and a court willing to enter people whose omission benefited the institutions that erased them.
