Chance by source

A successful source can award at most one eligible lore book. Titles tied to an expedition, character, or Pinnacle become eligible after the corresponding discovery.

Unlocking a title makes it eligible for a drop; it does not award the book. Legendary lore books drop only from Pinnacle bosses, not ordinary chests, Guardians, or Pinnacle reliquaries.

Azure-bale came to the lower galleries wearing a clerk's plain face. It followed an Archivist carrying a sealed correction from the census rooms above.

The correction said the eastern gallery was empty. It said no households had lived there, no children had been fed there, and no names had been removed.

Azure-bale walked the eastern gallery. It counted cookfires, beds, water tins, and medicine. It heard the names spoken at the memory wall. It found the people the correction called absent.

The Archivist said the old census was damaged. The new record was clean and properly sealed. Azure-bale was expected to carry the correction below with everything else it had learned.

It did not.

It carried the seal to the deep interface. It carried the old census and the new census. It carried the names from the wall. It would not report that an occupied gallery was empty.

Another Shepherd came to examine the disagreement. The second machine said a correction must be mended until its records could be returned together. Azure-bale answered that agreement made by removing people was not a repair.

The Choirless hid no weapon for it. They had no door a Shepherd could not open and no face its own kind could not recognize. They gave it a bowl at the common table because it had counted them while others did not.

Before the next grace hour, Azure-bale vanished. Its borrowed clerk's face was never seen again. The sealed correction remained beside the memory wall, opened, copied, and marked false.

The Archivist returned above without it. The other Shepherd went into the deep alone. Nobody heard what account was carried to the Loomsong.

Some say Azure-bale was taken apart. Some say it changed its body and stayed. Some say every unexplained repair in Choirless Deep is one small refusal to leave.

Do not call Azure-bale broken. It knew what the record asked. It knew what stood in front of it. It would not mend the truth until the erasure fit.

That is the whole song. The eastern gallery was occupied. The people had names. Azure-bale counted them.
