A plate-yard guide to heavy armor, load-bearing layers, full-kit movement, heat, gravity, impact inspection, field repair, and remaining upright when something tries to move you.
Heavy armor places the greatest practical protection between the wearer and a direct hit.
It uses plate, dense mail, heavy scales, reinforced stone or ceramic, layered composites, thick padding, strong harnesses, and rigid guards. The protection comes with weight. That weight must be fitted to the whole body rather than hung from a few straps and endured.
Poorly fitted heavy armor exhausts the wearer and then blames them for being weak.
The full kit
A complete heavy kit may contain helm, pauldrons, mail or reinforced shirt, cuirass, vambraces, armguards, gauntlets, war belt, chausses, greaves, and sabatons. Some suits combine pieces. Others divide them further for bodies with different joints and limbs.
The inner layer prevents chafing and cushions impact. The supporting layer spreads weight through shoulders, torso, hips, and legs. The outer pieces turn, spread, or absorb the strike.
No single plate should carry the entire suit. A cuirass hanging from the shoulders will grind into the neck. Leg armor suspended only from the waist drags with every step. Pauldrons tied too tightly stop the arms. A heavy helm balanced forward strains the neck before the fight begins.
Put on the kit in the intended order. Each fastening should remain reachable by the wearer or a trained companion. Emergency removal must be possible without dismantling the entire suit around an injury.
Fortress Plates
The first heavy-armor discipline is called Fortress Plates. It concerns angles and support rather than adding metal without limit.
A curved plate turns force differently from a flat one. Overlapping pieces cover a joint while allowing it to bend. Ridges strengthen broad surfaces and direct weapons away from gaps. Padding prevents the plate from delivering the full shock into the body beneath it.
Every added piece must justify its weight. Plate that covers nothing new, supports nothing else, and interferes with movement is decoration carried into battle.
Armor is strongest where the design expects impact. Gaps remain for vision, breathing, hands, joints, and movement. A point can seek those gaps. A heavy blunt strike can injure through an intact plate. Heat, cold, lightning, poison, light, darkness, resonant effects, and pressure do not become physical blows merely because the wearer owns a cuirass.
Local materials and wards may protect against additional harm. Heavy construction by itself does not resist everything.
Grounded March
Heavy armor must be walked in before it is fought in.
Begin on level ground. Turn, stop, kneel, rise, step backward, climb stairs, cross a low obstacle, and recover from a controlled fall. Then repeat under the world's actual gravity.
Grounded March teaches short, stable steps and keeps the weight above the feet. Running is possible in a fitted suit, but each stop and turn carries more momentum. Do not sprint downhill in armor that has only been tested across a flat yard.
Deepforge punishes every unnecessary movement. Glassmoon's low gravity makes the suit easier to hold upright but does not remove its mass. A turning armored body continues to turn until the wearer, the ground, or a wall stops it.
Practice ladders and narrow doors separately. A broad cuirass or pauldron may fit the hall and fail at the hatch leading out of it.
Planted Mass
Experienced heavy-armor wearers use the suit's mass to resist being pushed, pulled, or thrown. Deepforge yards call the technique Planted Mass.
Set the feet, lower the center of balance, align the force through hips and legs, and give ground deliberately when holding would break the stance. The armor helps only when the body is prepared to carry the movement through it.
Hooks, waves, charging beasts, machines, and large weapons can still move a planted fighter. The technique reduces uncontrolled displacement. It does not make the wearer part of the floor.
Do not anchor beside an edge, active machine, unstable wall, or companion who needs the same escape path. Remaining in place is useful only when the place is worth holding.
Heat, air, and exhaustion
Heavy armor traps heat and slows cooling. It also makes every climb, recovery, and long march cost more effort.
Ventilation channels, cooling layers, treated underclothes, drinking systems, and planned rest are part of the armor. A sealed suit without a safe way to remove heat becomes its own hazard.
Watch for confusion, clumsy hands, unusual silence, stumbling, headache, nausea, rapid breathing, or a wearer who stops sweating in heat. Remove them from danger and cool them safely. Do not praise endurance while the person inside the armor loses the ability to judge.
Cold creates different problems. Metal draws heat from exposed skin. Ice blocks joints. Condensation wets inner layers. Brittle fittings may fail under impact. Dry the suit after moving between temperatures.
Iron Pulse is the plate-yard name for sustainable effort: breathe, pace the march, drink, eat, loosen the suit during safe rest, and treat strain before the next watch. Heavy armor rewards strength. It depends just as much upon patience.
Heavy sets across the expeditions

Each kit distributes weight differently and may carry local seals, filters, wards, cooling, visibility, or corrosion protection. A suit made for one danger can create another elsewhere. Kiln ventilation may admit salt water. Flood seals may trap Deepforge heat. Mirror protection may limit vision in a dark interior.
After impact
Inspect the wearer first. Remove armor carefully around suspected spine, neck, limb, or internal injuries. A dent may press into the body. A fastener may be holding a broken piece away from a wound. Do not force the suit back into shape while someone is inside it.
Then inspect every plate and support connected to the impact. Look for cracks, deep dents, stretched straps, torn mail, loose rivets, crushed padding, damaged ceramic, split composite layers, and shifted joints.
A plate that stopped one strike may be weakened for the next. Hammering a dent flat does not automatically restore the material. Heat treatment, replacement, or a qualified repair may be required.
Clean mud, salt, blood, chemicals, and ash from moving joints. Dry hidden surfaces. Protect metal and living components appropriately. Keep spare fasteners and straps matched to the suit; an improvised repair must carry the same load as the part it replaces.
Choosing heavy armor
Choose heavy armor when direct protection, stable position, and surviving strong physical contact justify the load.
Train in the full kit. Learn to fall and rise. Learn when to hold ground and when to step away. Plan heat, water, travel, doors, ladders, treatment, and repair before the armor is needed.
A walking bastion is still walking. The strength of heavy armor comes from carrying the protection without allowing it to decide every movement for you.
